Driver in Jefferson Accident that Killed Three Admits to Being Drunk

The man who crashed a Ford Explorer that killed three members of his family this month, including an 11-year-old and a pregnant woman, told police he was drinking and “probably twice the legal limit [of alcohol]” at the time of the accident. The family was heading home from a birthday party when alleged drunk driver, Luis E. Torres of Jersey City, lost control of the Explorer on Route 15 South, flipped the vehicle and crashed into a home, ejecting many of the nine passengers and killing three family members. Lucila Colon, 62 and her granddaughter, Tevia Booth, 11, were dead at the scene, while Julissa Colon, 36, who was five months pregnant, was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead shortly after.
