Four people died, including two children, when a tractor-trailer and a school bus collided in rural Southern Nebraska, according to sources. Both drivers were killed after the vehicles caught fire. Truck driver Travis Witte, 21, was hauling some bales of hay from his farm when he collided with the school bus.
Four children on the bus were taken to Children’s Hospital & Medical Center in Omaha. Two of the other children and both the bus driver and truck driver died on the scene. One 7-year-old girl remains in critical condition, according to hospital spokeswoman Cherie Lytle. Another child underwent emergency surgery and is in stable condition, and another was released from the hospital. The accident remains under investigation and the sheriff’s office declined to comment.
“Our first concern in for the families of those affected by Wednesday’s events,” said Sara Bockstadter, Webster County attorney. “Our hearts go out to everyone who has been touched by this tragedy.”
