How Dangerous Are Uncontrolled Semi-Trailers?

The potential for serious injury extends far past the immediate area of the accident when a tractor-trailer loses control on the highway. Each car that a tractor-trailer collides with becomes another point of danger on the road. In addition, the stopping of traffic on a crowded highway affects all of the drivers behind the accident who need to slow down in time to not rear end the drivers in front of them. Furthermore, a semi-trailer weighs over 26 times more than the average car, so those cars that do collide with an out of control semi-trailer face serious injury or death.

According to CBS Local Philadelphia, there were two separate truck accidents on the New Jersey Turnpike on Wednesday, January 29. The first occurred around 8:00 a.m. in the northbound lanes near the Route 73 exit in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. The driver of a tanker-truck lost control of his vehicle and swerved about the road. The tanker-truck then flipped onto its side. The New Jersey Police Department (NJPD) emergency crews arrived and had to extricate the driver from the vehicle. A helicopter escorted the seriously injured driver to the hospital. Moments later, a loose tire slipped underneath another tractor-trailer. The driver of the second tractor-trailer then lost control of his vehicle and caused a multi-car pileup.

A short while later, in the southbound lanes of the same stretch of the New Jersey Turnpike, the driver of a tractor-trailer also lost control of his vehicle near mile marker 32.5. The tractor-trailer swerved about for a moment before flipping on its side and blocking all lanes of traffic. Cars stuck behind the accident were stranded for three hours.

In complicated multi-car pileups, it is difficult for truck accident victims to determine who is responsible for their injuries due to the multitude of vehicle trajectories. In such situations, it is advised that victims work with experienced car accident attorneys who can guide them through the complicated legal proceedings.
