Over 250 accidents were reported by the New Jersey State Police on January 10, many due to icy roads and adverse weather conditions. Ocean City reported 21 motor vehicle accidents in three hours the same day. Freezing rain fell on the state and black ice formed on many streets earlier this month. According to state police, many drivers were on the road, ignoring the possibility of ice.
A truck accident involving a fire truck occurred in Southampton Township that injured one man. According to authorities, a fire truck spun out on Route 206, crashing into four cars. The driver of the fire truck was injured and taken to a local hospital.
The New Jersey Hospital Association reported that some medical centers in the state were seeing three times the number of patients they usually do, mostly due to car accidents and falls from the ice. The National Weather Service issued a freezing-rain advisory and flood warning for the state.
Adverse weather, including heavy rains and icy roads, can cause serious accidents when drivers are reckless on the road. Large truck accidents are especially dangerous in adverse weather, due to the fact that most commercial trucks are incredibly large vehicles that can cause potentially fatal accidents. When commercial trucks overturn or jackknife on busy roads, they can collide into multiple other cars, creating pile-up collisions, usually resulting in serious injuries.
