NJ Truck Accident Causes Massive Explosion

A truck accident in Elizabeth, New Jersey on January 24 caused a massive fireball to shoot up into the sky visible for miles, according to ABC Local News. The gasoline tanker explosion caused authorities to shut down Route 1 and Route 9 for hours just before 2 a.m.

A car became wedged underneath the tanker, which was carrying 8,000 gallons of gasoline. The driver of the car, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead on the scene.

“The car was traveling northbound on Route 1 and 9, and the truck was going across,” says eyewitness Mike Herrera. “So I guess the car went through the light as the truck was going around the circle, and it went right underneath. Boom.”

Respondents closed down Bayway Circle, the main route to the Goethals Bridge. The accident remains under investigation, but authorities have not ruled out driver error.
