Three-Car Pileup on New Jersey Turnpike Injures Five

A three-car accident on the New Jersey turnpike injured five people and halted traffic for several hours on October 17. The accident involved a charter bus, a dump truck and a car. All the vehicles involved were northbound on the Turnpike when the dump truck struck the car, causing the car to collide with a Megabus charter bus. The driver and passenger in the car had to be freed from the vehicle by firefighters. Both trapped victims of the car were taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton and were last reported in stable condition, according to hospital staff. The dump truck driver suffered facial lacerations and a head injury and was taken to a hospital in Hamilton. Veteran Firefighter Killed by Drunk Driver in Union Township Motorcycle Accident

A drunk driver killed a veteran firefighter from Whitestone, Queens in a Union Township motorcycle accident on October 11. John Monteverde, 56, was heading from Pennsylvania to Queens when 24-year-old Anthony Marsel struck Monteverde’s motorcycle with his Honda Accord after rolling through a stop sign. According to Union Police Lt. Robert Christie, there was no reason Marsel should not have seen Monteverde’s motorcycle coming down the road. Monteverde was thrown 30 feet in the collision and pronounced dead at the scene. According to police, Marsel’s breath smelled of alcohol at the time of the accident and his eyes were bloodshot. He was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated and other charges related to the accident. Monteverde was a 31-year veteran of the New York City Fire Department and left behind three adult children. An Essex County Superior Court jury, after over two weeks of trial, rendered a verdict for Plaintiff in the gross amount of $4.5 million, net amount $2,735,455.08.
