Killed by a Drunk Truck Driver – Is Alcohol Use Common in Truckers?

An Ocean Township man recently died after being rear-ended by a tractor-trailer. The accident occurred in mid-afternoon on September 7 on Route 440. The trucker smashed into the back of a Hyundai Sonata and jackknifed, striking two other vehicles. The driver of the Sonata was pushed into the back of another vehicle and was pronounced dead an hour later. The truck driver was charged with driving under the influence. Other drivers were treated for minor injuries. Prior to the accident, a witness called 911 to report the truck driver’s erratic driving. The Problem of Driver Fatigue: NJ Semi-Truck Crashes When Driver Falls Asleep

In late April, a semi-truck driving in South Brunswick ran off the road and took out a traffic light. Police said the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel. Fortunately, no one was injured. But the crash shines a light on a very real problem – driver fatigue. This is especially problematic for drivers of semi-trucks. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in 25 drivers aged 18 or older admits to having fallen asleep behind the wheel within the last 30 days. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 72,000 accidents, 44,000 injuries and 800 deaths resulted from drowsy driving in 2013. What Caused This Parcel Service Truck to Crash Into a Building?

Last month, a dump truck slammed into a parked UPS truck, causing both of the trucks to drive up the lawn of a funeral home and into the building. The UPS truck driver was in the vehicle at the time and sustained a painful leg injury. The dump truck driver, on the other hand, fled the scene of the accident. When he was apprehended a few blocks down, police found him to be in possession of several controlled substances, including Suboxone, Seroquel and Valium. The dump truck driver was arrested and ultimately charged with possession of illegal substances, assault by auto, reckless driving and driving without a license to operate a commercial vehicle.
