New Jersey Hazmat Responds To Gas Tanker Spill

A gasoline tanker truck accident on Route 440 has on April 10 has left 40 year-old diver Alexander Kurtanidze in critical but stable condition, according to WPIX 11 News. The truck overturned and spilled 8,500 gallons of fuel onto the freeway, according to the New Jersey State Police Twitter feed.

The truck was attempting to exit Route 440 onto Garden State Parkway when it was cut off by another vehicle. Sgt. Brian Polite, spokesman for the New Jersey State Police, identified the driver of the other vehicle as Jennifer Christie, 31, from Staten Island. Christie suffered only a minor personal injury. Kurtanidze was airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital where he received treatment for his injuries.

New Brunswick Fire Department and New Jersey Hazmat responded to the truck accident, using foam operations to contain the fuel spill. Route 440 was shut down for several hours before being reopened that morning at 7:30 AM.
