According to WCAX News, a driver was killed after a tractor-trailer crashed into her car on Interstate 95 in Westchester County on August 16. According to police reports, two wheels flew off of the truck causing the accident.
The victim has been identified as 62-year-old Adele Mancuso. Investigators told reporters that it seemed the truck lost its entire rear axle just prior to the commercial truck accident. The axle flew airborne for 100 yards before smashing into Mancuso’s windshield and roof.
“The tractor-trailer lost the whole rear axle with two wheels attached,” Policeman Joseph Baccera said. “The entire axle compartment went airborne about 100 yards and crashed into the windshield and roof of the northbound vehicle.” The victim was killed instantly.
The driver of the truck was located later that evening and was being questioned by police.
This serves as yet another tragic reminder of why vehicle maintenance and inspection is so important for trucker and trucking companies. This was likely a malfunction that could have been corrected and possibly saved a life.
