A truck accident on I-90- in Newstead, New York killed one on February 8, according to WKBW.com. Officials shut down the New York State Thruway for several hours after the accident, which occurred around 10:30 p.m.
According to police reports, a cargo van had been stopped on the shoulder of the highway and was merging back onto the freeway when it was struck by a tractor-trailer. The van reportedly did not have its lights on, and the truck driver was not able to see it.
“The tractor trailer struck the rear of a cargo van, and both vehicles overturned off the north shoulder of the Thruway,” said New York State Police Sergeant John McGee. “The driver of the cargo van was pronounced dead on the scene.”
The truck driver was rushed to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
“The two westbound travel lanes of the 1-90 were closed from 11 p.m. to 1:37 a.m. Traffic was diverted, one lane of traffic was open,” McGee said. “The tractor trailer was carrying 44,000 pounds of aluminum from Oswego, New York to the state of Ohio. It’s a tragic accident. Traffic wasn’t heavy at the time but it really happens quickly.”
