Police in New York are looking for a suspect in a fatal hit-and-run truck accident in the Bronx, according to the Wall Street Journal. A white box truck making a left turn struck a pedestrian crossing the road and then left the scene.
The victim, 26-year-old Elliot Jermaine, was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center and died from his injuries. The accident remains under investigation, and it is unclear whether the driver was aware of the pedestrian.
“The driver should go to prison,” said June Miller, relative of the victim. “It’s tragic.”
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported 70,000 injuries from pedestrian accidents in 2010. Pedestrians are particularly vulnerable to commercial trucks with longer stopping distances than other vehicles. Fatal pedestrian accidents are much more likely to occur in urban areas with a high volume of pedestrians.
