A two-year-old girl was killed in a pedestrian accident in Bloomfield on September 23 at an intersection that is accident-prone, according to local residents. The accident occurred when the toddler and her mother were crossing Bloomfield Avenue in a crosswalk and a pick-up truck making a left turn struck them both. According to a tow truck operator who was near the intersection when the accident occurred, the driver may have been turning too soon, attempting to get ahead of traffic.
Emergency responders attempted to resuscitate the child at the scene, but she was later pronounced dead at the Clara Mass Medical Center in Belleville. The mother suffered non life-threatening injuries in the accident. An investigation into the accident is ongoing. According to business owners near the intersection, the area is heavily trafficked and has four to six accidents per month due to cars trying to beat the light while making right and left turns.
Bloomfield officials are set to meet with county officials to discuss safety measures in the area soon. According to local residents, complaints about the intersection have been going on for many years and one business owner said the intersection is “like a four-lane highway.”
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 627 fatal traffic accidents occurred in New Jersey in 2011, 142 of which were pedestrian fatalities.
